Water Type (CO2 gas expelled) Extinguisher operation & Filling Full Explained

Water Type (CO2 Gas Expelled)

  • Construction:- These extinguishers are identical in appearance and construction to soda acid type of extinguishers. The only exception is that instead of acid phial these extinguishers are provided with CO2 cartridge which is screwed to the cap of the extinguisher. The co2 cartridge has a sealing disc. The plunger has a piercing type nail attached to it in such a way that it will puncture the sealing disc of co2 cartridge when pushed down. A syphon tube is fitted inside so that it can be used in upright position.

  • Application:-class a fire involving ordinary solid carbonaceous fuels.
            Capacity: portable – 9 litres
            Mobile: 50 litre, 150 litres

  • Operation:-
  1. Upright type
  2. Remove the safety clip
  3. Remove from the wall/ stand mountings by holding the top handle with the left hand.
  4. Place it on ground at 6 meter or less from the location of Fire.
  5. Hold the pipe in left hand and press the knob hard enough to puncture the co2 cartridge seal disc.
  6. Direct the jet at the base of the Fire by lifting the extinguisher with right hand. Move around the Fire to extinguish the last clinker. Use the entire contents of the extinguisher.
  7. Place the empty extinguisher in the horizontal position after use.

  • Recharging:-
  1. Open the cap
  2. Clean the extinguisher and its parts thoroughly.
  3. Pour clean water in the container up to maximum filing mark.
  4. Replace CO2 cartridge with a new one.

  • Tests:-
  1. Check one in 3 months / inside and outside of container for any corrosion or erosion.
  2. Check the weight of co2 cartridge. Replace if the loss is more then 10% the weight is Marg on neck of every cartage.
  3. Check all movable parts for their free movement, lubricant if required.
  4. Check discharge performance once every year.
  5. Test the container hydraulically at 17.5 kg /cm2 pressure once in two years.

  • Labeling:- Every extinguisher must be clearly labelled in a permanent manner to indicate.
  1. The name of manufacturer
  2. Capacity
  3. Real of manufacture
  4. Method of operation
  5. The class of fire, suitable for.

Cooling, Starvation, Smothering, Chain breaking mechanism With Water Merits And Demerits full explained (chapter-2 Unit-1)

Fire Extinguishing Modes Fire can be extinguished by employing one or more of the following techniques. Cooling:-  This means removal of heat this can be achieved by the use of water. Generally 'A' class fire can be extinguished by this method. Starvation:- Removal of fuel. this can be achieved by cutting out the fuel supply to the fire. This can be achieved by physical removal of fuel e.g. pumping out the fuel from the tank on fire or isolating the supply valve etc. Smothering:- Removal of oxygen (air) or diluting the same to blow the minimum requirement. This can be achieved by by applying an inert gas such as CO2 or nitrogen or dry chemical powder or halons etc. Chain breaking mechanism: - This can be achieved by the application of halogenated hydrocarbons or dry chemical powder which distribute the chain reaction between free free radicals of fuel and atmospheric air.
